There are few regions in the world as beautiful as that
surrounding Nagyvázsony. To the North is one of the tallest mountains
of the Bakony, Kab-hegy rising to 600 metres, to the South one can enjoy
the scenic beauties of the villages on the hillsides surrounding the uplands
of the Lake Balaton. Kinizsi Castle, in the middle of the village is over half a millennium old and unlike its contemporaries was built not at the top of a hill, but under the houses of the old village. According to the legend its most famous inhabitant, Pál Kinizsi rose from a miller boy to an army general. This soldier, who earned his respect in the battles against the Turks founded the modern Hungarian army of the late middle ages, the Black Army of King Matthias.
Ownership of the village changed hands several times during the Turkish invasion and the surrounding territories became depopulated. István Zichy took over in 1649 and subsequent to the introduction of German settlers the region prospered as before. The fort was restored in the fifties. Further work is currently being carried out. Jousting tournaments linked with medieval banquets are organised on special holidays or for large numbers of visitors, and when the need arises students have exceptional history lessons inside the ancient walls of the castle, which is open all year round. The Postamúzeum (Post Office Museum), unique in the region, can be found in the street above the castle and exhibits the history of the post office and telecommunications through period tools, uniforms and post carriages.
The primary school building, the Kisiskola can be found at the upper end of the Vár utca. The plaque on the wall recounts that Robert Lieben, a world famous Austrian scientist, the inventor of the radio valve supported the building of the school in 1907 owing to family ties to the village.
A notable listed building of the village is the nearly intact Gothic church, the only one of its kind in the area. The Baroque furnishings of the Szent István templom, (Saint Stephen's Church) commissioned by Pál Kinizsi in 1481, is situated at the junction of the road to Veszprém, and originates from the 18th century.
Nagyvázsony can be much more than single day trips. Having visited the local places of interest, visitors staying at Nagyvázsony or any of the neighbouring villages can spend several interesting days in the environs. Not far from Nemesleányfalu, which is part of Nagyvázsony, next to the Kinizsi-forrás (Kinizsi Spring) are the ruins of the tálodi kolostor (Tálod Cloisters) dating back to the 13th century.
Picturesque touring routes lead to the North to Kab-hegy (Kab Mountain), whilst to the South-East nature lovers can follow the pilgrims route to Zádor-vár (Zádor Castle) via Vöröstó and Barnag. Bygone centuries come to life through the old churches, calvaries, and renovated peasant cottages in the surrounding villages.
From Spring till Autumn anglers can count on a rich catch from the fishing lake at the edge of the village. Should anyone fancy a swim, the bathing spas of the Lake Balaton are fifteen minutes away. The surrounding town of Veszprém, Herend, Balatonfüred, Tihany, Tapolca, Badacsony and Keszthely with their listed buildings and other noteworthy places can offer pleasant programmes for cooler days. Gathering an increasing number of followers is the beautiful Káli-medence (Káli Basin), barely 15 minutes away. There are regular busses from Nagyvázsony to Budapest and the neighbouring towns. Whilst it has no train station, hired coaches or regular time-table busses bring the village within easy reach of Veszprém railway station, only 20 kilometres away. Several restaurants, patisseries and food shops are open in the village. Guests are offered comfortable accommodation at the Kastély Szálló (Castle Hotel), guest houses, tourist hostel next to the castle and at an increasing number of private houses. Village tradesmen offer a near complete range of services. Local inhabitants have been getting to know Vázsony and its surroundings for decades and yet there is always something new to find. Why don't you come and visit us too! írta: Gyõrffy Árpád
